Teaching Web Literacy?
Based upon what you know so far about using the web for teaching and learning, is it ever too early to begin teaching students about web literacy (e.g., how to decide if information is trustworthy)? How might you help small children (e.g., first grade) begin to learn about web literacy?

I general terms I'd say you could start pretty young with teaching kids about web literacy, but obviously it would change from child to child.
ReplyDeleteI think first grade is a great time to start teaching kids about the web. It's important for students to learn as early as possible the correct way to use the internet
ReplyDeleteIt is never to early to beging teaching students about web literacy. There is so much information out there we need to know how to search through the crap and get to the facts. Helping young children learn what the difference between correct valid information and general unvaild information will give them the first step in learning in the differnce between the two.
ReplyDeleteIt is never too early to teach children about web literacy. In today's world, technology is being used by younger and younger children each year. By teaching them about the web at an early age will help them retain the knowledge that is important to have as a web user.

With the growing use of technology today, especially on the web, it is SO important to teach children how to use and implement this technology into their education and everyday use. It is very important to start teaching children at a young age how to safely use the internet, and get the most educational content out of it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is ever too early to teach children about web literacy. It is very important to not always believe what you hear or see. Because of this, it is important for kids to have a better understanding about what is and is not credible on the web!
ReplyDeleteI think a child should have basic skills at junior high age, then build upon those skills in high school with more advanced learning.

ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think it is ever too early to begin teaching students about web literacy. I think that web literacy is an important skill to have, and children should be learning this skill asap. Obviously you would not want to expose children to aspects of the web that are to advanced for them. But just like any other from of education, web literacy can be taught at age level.
ReplyDeleteI think as soon as a child can use technology responsibly they should be given a chance to learn how to use it. When children are younger it might be better to have the computer be locked to anything that the children could cause problems with and also make sure that they are closely monitored.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is an age that is too young to start becoming web literate as long as it is monitored and very structured. I think too often small children are left alone to explore the internet because parents are too busy, and this is when they can get themselves into trouble and misuse the web. Therefore, if parents and teachers set a strong foundation for web literacy from the very beginning, students are much more likely to use the web properly and efficiently.

ReplyDeleteFrom what i have learned I think that it is never too early to teach using technology. As a teacher you need to be aware of what age of students you are working with and adjust the technology you use appropriate for that age level. It is important that at an early age you teach students how to be safe on the web and where to go, and where not to go. If you begin to start teaching children at a young age they will be prepared for their future in web literacy.
I think that it is best for kids to learn web literacy at a young age. It's better for them to learn at a young age because they are going to be using the internet anyway, so why not just teach them what is right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt is never too early to begin working on literacy of any kind. As technology becomes increasingly important in our society getting a head-start could never hurt. The earlier, the better. The longer you wait to learn about technology, the harder it will become. Technology advances as a great pace. The longer you wait to start learning about it, the longer it will take to get to the place where many people could never even dream of.
ReplyDeleteI think that as soon as a child starts school, whether it be preschool or kindergarten, they are ready to learn about web literacy. We all use the internet for so many things so why not teach them when they're young? I would help small children by first showing them how to use a computer and then how to connect to a website. I suppose you could even go into finer details about different types of websites, who uses them, and what they're used for. A first grader is even capable of posting a blog if shown how and I think they would enjoy this activity and it's a great learning experience for them too.
ReplyDeleteOne way to help younger children learn about web literacy is to compare their limited world of technology to what they know now. For example, when you tell a child never to take candy from a stranger, this can be compared to not releasing information to strangers online.
ReplyDeleteI think once students can read it is important to start teaching them about web literacy. The internet will most likely be a big part of student's lives and it is important for them to understand early how to use it.
ReplyDeleteAt the rate of advancing technology, I think that children will eventually begin learning to type before or while learning to write. Since technology is so important in the world now, it would be tough to not be literate. The sooner we can get children comfortable with computers, the better.
ReplyDeleteI would help small children learn aobut web literacy by beginning to play learning games and moving on to more challenging lessons.
In my opinion, it is a good time to start teaching kids about the web as early. Becasue teachers can help students identify which webs they can see or not. Also, kids are good at learning. They can learn the technology well as they young.
